With more than one million visitors annually, the San Antonio Zoological Gardens and Aquarium in San Antonio, Texas is one of the larger animal parks in the United States. Founded in 1914 by Colonel George W. Brackenridge, then owner of the San Antonio Express – News newspaper, The San Antonio Zoological Gardens and Aquarium is now home to more than 3,500 animals from 600 species spread over 14 hectares. Particularly worth seeing is the Richard Friedrich Aquarium, opened in 1948.
