Where is Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site?

Rosedown Plantation was owned by Daniel (known before the Civil War as one of the nation’s richest men) and Martha Turnbull.

In the 1820s to the 1840s, the plantation was created through several land purchases and then covered about 3,455 Acres, most of which were planted with cotton.
The construction of the main house began in 1834 and was completed in May of the following year. It was equipped with exclusive furniture, most pieces were imported from the North and from Europe. Surprisingly, even after the civil war, there was still a lot of the furniture purchased by the Turnbulls and many original pieces are still in Rosedown today.

The gardens were the passion of Martha Turnbell. Inspired by the famous gardens of France and Italy that she had seen during her honeymoon in Europe, their design influenced Martha’s activities in Rosedown. Over a period of many decades, the Gardens grew to an area of about 28 Acres.
