Richmond (Maori: Waimea) is a city and the seat of the Tasmanian District Council in New Zealand. It is located 13 kilometers (8 miles) south of Nelson on the South Island, near the southern tip of Tasman Bay. The city, first settled by Europeans in 1842, was named in 1854 by the city of Richmond on the Thames near London. The city has an estimated population of 17,250 as of June 2020.
