Quoddy Head State Park covers 541 acres at the tip of America’s easternmost Peninsula and offers the opportunity to visit a historic lighthouse, have a picnic, and explore up to five miles of scenic hiking trails. From the candy-striped West Quoddy Head Light, Maine’s easternmost lighthouse, visitors can gaze across the Quoddy Channel (which separates the U.S. and Canada) at the towering red cliffs of Grand Manan Island in New Brunswick. West Quoddy Head Light was first built in 1808 by order of President Thomas Jefferson. The current tower and House from 1858 were occupied by resident lightkeepers until the time of automatic lighting by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1988. The Park offers some of the best wildlife viewing in Maine. Visitors can see humpback whales, minke whales and fin whales off the coast in summer, as well as rafts of eider ducks, Scots and Old Squaw Ducks. Kittiwakes, boobies, Black-Bellied Plovers, reddish Turnstones and purple Sandpipers are all sometimes at home on Sail Rock.
