Where is Portage Glacier?
Although Portage is actually a ‘ghost town’ today, it is still one of the most popular roadside attractions in south central Alaska for one reason only – Portage Glacier.
Between Girdwood and the road to Whittier Lies What Remains of Portage. The community at the end of the Turnagain Arm had almost 100 inhabitants by The’ Good Friday Earthquake ‘ of 1964. The massive earthquake lowered the coast by 1.80 to 3.66 meters, so that the surrounding area of Portage was flooded by salt water. The few remnants of the former village are some buildings sunk into the mudflats and isolated dead trees – all easy to see from the Seward Highway.
