Where is Pleven Located?

The city of Pleven occupies the central part of the hilly Danube plain, it is located 160 km from the capital Sofia, 320 km from the Black Sea and 30 km south of the Danube. First-class street Sofia-Varna (83) leads to the city. It has a population of about 135,000. Pleven is located in the temperate continental climate zone with large temperature differences from -15°C in winter to +35-40°C in summer.

The city of Pleven and the Pleven region have a thousand-year history. The earliest testimonies of human life in this area date from the end of the Fifth Millennium BC. In the 1st century AD, these territories were annexed to the Roman Empire. On the way from the Roman city of Ulpia Eskus (remains of which can be seen near the village of Gigen) to Philipopolis (today’s Plovdiv) the Roman station Storgoziya is built near today’s Pleven, and later also the fortress with the same name.
