You have ten minutes? Thanks to this miracle of engineering, it does not take longer to get from the hot desert on the ground to the cool, pine-covered Highlands. During the 4 km ascent, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway smoothly crosses Chino Canyon to reach the mountain Station at 2,596 m on the flank of the towering Mount San Jacinto, turning slowly (it is the largest rotating gondola in the world). You won’t be able to stop posting Instagram Stories during the drive, because the view of rugged cliffs and Canyons (including waterfalls to look out for in spring) is simply wonderful. The celebrated naturalist John Muir once wrote: “…the view from San Jacinto is the most incredible sight that is on this earth.”And he did not exaggerate.

Hiking trails of more than 80 km in the Mount San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness Area are available on the mountain. The gondola also runs in Winter – don’t be surprised if fellow travellers have snowshoes or cross-country skis with them to explore the snowy Hinterland (rental takes place via the Winter Adventure Center at the Mountain Station). Tip for nature lovers: a short hike will take you to Round Valley, where you’ll find particularly scenic campsites (reservations must be made five days in advance) – even in Winter.
