Ottawa has a steep political career: founded in 1827 as Bytown, it was not until 1855 that the town got its current name. Two years later, Queen Victoria said the young Ottawa, the capital of the then British province of Canada. Today, the city has a Million inhabitants, back then lived just 10,000 people in the lumberjack settlement.

Why the choice fell on Ottawa-that is not completely clear to this day. According to a legend, Victoria is said to have put her hat needle on a map of Canada, halfway between the significantly larger cities of Montréal and Toronto. The nearest place was also Ottawa. Of course, the royal edict was not quite that coincidental: a major role should have been played by the fact that Ottawa is relatively isolated in the densely wooded Canadian Hinterland. The Region was thus not threatened by US attacks – in contrast to Toronto close to the border with the United States.
