Nazareth or Nazareth is a city in the north of Israel in the historical landscape of Galilee. Since the Middle Ages it has been inhabited mainly by Arab Christians. Together with its sister city Natzerat Illit (Upper Nazareth), Nazareth has about 120,000 inhabitants (as of 2005); nazerat Illit has 55,000 inhabitants, and Nazareth 65,000. While Nazerat Illit is predominantly inhabited by Jews, the population of Nazareth is predominantly Muslim, large parts of the population are Christian. The special significance of today’s Nazareth lies in the fact that it is considered the home of Jesus.

According to the Gospels, his parents Mary and Joseph the carpenter lived there. In Nazareth, the Archangel Gabriel came to Mary and announced to her the birth of the future Savior (the Annunciation of the Lord), and there Jesus grew up after his birth in Bethlehem. The earliest non-Christian mention of Nazareth is an inscription from Caesarea Maritima from the late 3rd or early 4th century.
