The city is located in Angola, about 200 kilometers north of the border with Namibia and has about 150,000 inhabitants. It is also the capital of the province of the same name. Namibe was founded in 1840 by the Portuguese. Namibe is known for a rare botanical sight: a plant named after the Austrian physician and botanist Friedrich Welwitsch, is quite typical of the territory around Namibe: the “Welwitschia mirabilis”. It is an ancient plant that is endemic to the Namib Desert. The individual plant can be over 100 years old. The Welwitschie consists of only two inconspicuous pairs of leaves and the plant Marrow was once baked and eaten by the people of the Herero in hot ashes. They called the plant “onyanga”, which means “desert onion”. “Two-leaf-cannot-die” is the Translation from Afrikaans, where the welwitschia “tweeblaarkanniedood” means.
