The monument to Martin Luther King Jr. was opened to the public for the first time on 22 August. On the National Mall, the monument occupies an area of about 1.6 hectares. Part of the monument is a commemorative plaque about 138 meters tall, on which more than a dozen quotations can be read as an inscription, selected by a group of historians from the writings, sermons and speeches of King. The stone of hope, a nine-Meter-high sculpture of King, stands apart from the mountain of despair. The monument thus recalls a speech by King in which he said that his dream and faith allowed civil rights activists to return to the southern states and “to strike a stone of hope out of a mountain of despair.”
The King Memorial is located near the Lincoln Memorial, from the steps of which King delivered his famous “I-Have-a-Dream”speech in the summer of 1963. At that time, there was still racial segregation in many places in the form of separate schools, shopping malls, Restaurants and seating areas in buses. African Americans often encountered violence when trying to register for elections in the southern states. King had initiated a long-running struggle of nonviolent resistance to change that. In his”I-Have-a-Dream “speech, King said that they would not be satisfied until”righteousness flows like a river and righteousness like a Mighty River.” Less than a year later, then-President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, which abolished racial segregation.
