Less than 30 kilometres from Amman, on the route of the 5000-year-old Kings’ Highway (the historic King’s road) is one of the most remarkable places in the Holy Land. According to a number of ancient sites, the first city you reach is Madaba, known as the “city of mosaics”.

What Country is Madaba in?

In Madaba you can admire spectacular Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics. The city is also home to a famous mosaic map from the 16th century showing Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Consisting of two million colored stones, the map depicts hills and valleys, villages and towns to the Nile Delta.

Other impressive mosaics can be found in the Church of the Virgin Mary and in the Archaeological Museum. You show a colourful variety of plants and flowers, fish, birds, and (mythical)animals, as well as scenes from mythology and everyday pursuits of hunting, fishing, or agriculture. In the churches and private houses of Madaba there are literally hundreds of mosaics from the 5th to the 7th century.
