Where is Mackay Located?

The city itself is located at the mouth of the Pioneer River and strongly Victorian. It is almost exactly halfway between Brisbane and Cairns. In the immediate vicinity is the holiday region of the Whitsunday Islands.

The offshore Great Barrier Reef is located about 50 km to the East with an island like Newry Island. All around is a huge Farm and cattle breeding area with fertile valleys, in which a lot of sugar cane is cultivated. Extensive river deltas characterize the Region.

Very attractive is Cape Hillsborough National Park (30 km N) – A peninsula with rocky coast of volcanic origin. There you will find a very nice sandy beach where kangaroos can be seen from time to time. On hot summer days you can even watch them swimming in the sea. There is also a barbecue area and attractive hiking trails. In the nearby town of Seaforth, kangaroos are also frequent guests in the gardens.

The main hiking area is the Eungella Mountain National Park (84 km W). With over 50,000 hectares, it is the largest rainforest national park in Queensland. A unique Mix of subtropical and tropical forest with waterfalls, steep gorges, crystal clear streams, inviting swimming lakes and breathtaking views. The Broken River in the National Park is considered one of the best places in Australia to spot platypus in the wild.
