The image of the city is dominated by its many students. Many young people from all over the north of the country study here at the oldest university in all of Latin America, which was founded at the beginning of the 19th century.

A popular meeting place in León is the Parque Central at the Cathedral de la Asunción. The Cathedral is the largest in Latin America. Leon in Nicaraguain 1747 construction began and it was not until 1860 that the Catedral de la Asunción was completed. The roof and towers of the cathedral can be climbed, from there you have a wonderful view over the city, its surroundings and its volcanoes.
