What Country is Le Marais in?
The Marais was for a long time a marshland at the gates of the city of Paris. It was drained by members of the temple order in the 13th century and added to the city in the following century when the walls of Paris were extended. In the 17th century, the Marais became the preferred residential area of the nobility, who had numerous villas and city palaces built. In the course of the French Revolution, however, the nobility was expelled from the Marais, which subsequently lost its lustre. It was not until 1962, under Charles de Gaulle, that the Marais experienced a new heyday.
