Where is Lake Powell Located?
The existence of Lake Powell is due to the Glen Canyon Dam, which was built in the 1960s to generate electricity in the middle of the Colorado River. At the same time, seven U.S. States and Mexico are supplied with water from the lake.
On September 22, 1966 Ladybird Johnson opened the dam and it took 17 years until Lake Powell was completely filled. Construction began in 1956, creating the second largest artificial lake in the United States by submerging the second largest Canyon on Earth. The enormous encroachment on nature has created a shoreline upstream that, with its many branches, is longer than the American West Coast. Since 1963, The Glen Canyon Dam has dammed the water of the Colorado into the second largest reservoir in the USA with 33.3 billion cbm of water. The shoreline covers 3,150 km.
