Where is Kyoto Located?

Kyoto is a city in the western part of Honsho Island, Japan. It is located about 400 km southwest of the capital Tokyo in the Kansai metropolitan area.

In the 19th century, the Edo shogunate lost power and had to bow to the progressive forces of the country. In 1868 the Power of the shoguns was finally terminated. The Japanese Emperor moved his residence to Edo. The city of Edo was renamed Tokyo and was given the status of a capital, which it ultimately remains today.
