Where is Ko Lanta Located?

Koh Lanta is located off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea between the two cities Krabi and Trang. Strictly speaking, Koh Lanta is a double island in the Mu Koh Lanta national Park, including a total of over 50 Islands.

The Double Island consists of the northern island of Lanta Noi (small Lanta) and the southern main island of Lanta Yai (large Lanta), where the two islands are separated only by a narrow strait. When in general the speech of Koh Lanta is, usually the island Koh Lanta Yai is meant, since only this is developed touristically.

What Country is Ko Lanta in?

The islands are home to over 20,000 inhabitants, although the island of Lanta Yai is hardly inhabited and many of the small islands of the National Park are not inhabited at all. The majority of the population are Muslim fishermen. Furthermore, a smaller proportion of Thai Buddhists, Thai-Chinese and sea gypsies live here – in Thai they are called Chao-Le.

Koh Lanta was until recently a kept secret among visitors to the country and so far the delicate balancing act between development of the island and protection of the environment is still present. Hotel facilities emerged only on Koh Lanta Yai, while on Lanta Noi is still agriculture, particularly the cultivation of rice as well as coconut and rubber tree plantations – is operated. There are hardly any Shopping centers and the nightlife is limited – there are no big parties, only some Bars at Hotels and some beach sections.
