An easy to visit cave near Tucson. A visit is only possible within the framework of a guided tour, for which you can/should make a reservation in advance.
First discovered in 1974 on the property of the Kartchner family and handed over to the administration of Arizona State Parks in 1988.
As a single traveler you may be lucky enough to get a rest spot with a tour, otherwise the tours in high season are often booked out weeks in advance. There are two different tours.
First one is driven with a small Bimmelbähnchen from the visitor center to the cave entrance, then it goes on well-developed paths through several air locks into the mountain. Here there is a constant temperature and humidity. The tours are very worth seeing and take about 45 minutes. However, the taking away of any food (drinks, food) is strictly prohibited. In addition, you are not allowed to photograph (allegedly for security reasons). Therefore there are only official photos. There is also a fairly decent Campground adjacent to the visitor centre.
