Kerbela, also spelled Karbala and Kerbala, is a sacred place for Muslims in today’s central Iraq. The former uninhabited desert gained notoriety through the historical martyrdom of Imam Husains (a.) on the day of Ashura, and there constructed the mausoleums of the martyrs.
