Where is Karakol Located?

Karakol is the largest city on Lake Issyk Kul with about 70,000 inhabitants. Due to its proximity to the Tienschan mountain pass, it was an important trading town on the Silk Road. Also from a tourist point of view, the location between the lake (about 5 km) and the Terskey-Alatau in the South (Tienschan) is ideal.

Together with the well-developed tourist infrastructure, it has become a visitor magnet. So Karakol is used as an intermediate station of Alpine climbers, the aim of which approximately 140 km away, and the Inylchek glacier and its ice caves Khan Thengri (7010 m) and Pik Pobjeda (7439 m). Already in the 19th century. the city served as a starting point for explorers. The mild climate and the only 12 km away ski resort, which is the most beautiful in Kyrgyzstan, makes the city a year-round destination. Russians and Kazakhs also spend their holidays here. The Karakol River, which crosses the city and whose eponymous Karakol Valley lies south of the city, is a popular hiking area.

Karakol was founded in 1869 and quickly established itself as one of the most beautiful cities. The Flair of the Gründerzeit is still present today through its magnificent wooden houses with Russian carvings. The Dungan Mosque of 1910, built entirely from the spruce wood of Tienshan and reminiscent of a Buddhist pagoda, should not be missed. Also worth seeing is the Russian Orthodox Church, which was also built of wood.
