Where is Kandy Located?

Kandy, also called Maha Nuwara (big city), is located in the central mountains of Sri Lanka and is considered the most beautiful city in the country.

The former royal city has changed: traffic chaos, noise and stench are often the first thing the visitor notices. However, if you look closer and longer, you will discover the charm and true beauty of Kandy. The city is the religious center of the country and is frequently visited. This has to do with its major attractions, but also with their pleasant temperatures. Because of its higher location, the climate here is more pleasant than in the lowlands.

What Country is Kandy in?

The most important attraction of Kandy is the world famous Tooth temple Sri Dalada Maligawa. It is said that a Buddha’s canine tooth is kept here. However, only the reliquary can be considered and of course the magnificent temple. On a hill in the west of the city stands a gigantic white Buddha Statue, which is about 30 m high. From the busy Peredeniya Road you can walk comfortably on this hill. Just as relaxed, however, can be strolled at Kandy Lake (also: Milchsee), which is a popular meeting place for locals. It was laid out in 1812 under King Sri Wikrama Raja Singha.
