Where is Kampong Chhnang Located?

Kampong Chhnang province is located in central Cambodia. In this lowland an always humid, tropical heart beats and the people live mainly very rural and fish and grow rice. Most of the activity in the region takes place on the shores of Tonle Sap lake, the large inland lake of Cambodia, which is fed by the Mekong and has always played a decisive role in the country’s history. The soils around the huge body of water are enormously fertile deep into the province and favour year-round rice cultivation.

Fishing is of course also very important in the Region and its center is located in the eponymous provincial capital Kampong Chhnang. If you are in Phnom Penh for a few days during your round trip to Cambodia, it is definitely worth taking a detour to this cozy port city-you cannot enjoy a typical freshwater fish from the South – East Asia region fresher than here.

The Tonle Sap lake is so big, so full of stories and so impressive that it gets its own chapter here. Fed by the legendary Mekong River, it has been bringing fresh Sediment and thus fertile soil into the heart of Cambodia since ancient times and thus favours extremely productive rice cultivation. Since the dimensions of the Tonle Sap change Extremely with the dry or with the rainy season, it has no rigid Bank and the flood in the rainy months sponges the carried Sediment far into the plain of the province. The surface of the lake stretches approximately 2800 square kilometers in the dry season, to approximately 10,500 square kilometers in the rainy season, while the water depth of 3 meters swells up to 14 metres. Only at the end of November the Maximum is reached and the water slowly flows off again. Now also the high season for fishing begins and so it is not surprising that the Cambodians have been celebrating their traditional water festival, the so-called Bon Om Touk, for centuries. 300 different freshwater fish species find their home in this largest lake in Southeast Asia and the fish population can still be described as healthy and in ecological balance, but unfortunately in recent years also the industrial fishing on the Tonle Sap has taken hold and disturbs this balance already sensitively.

About half of the 225,000 tons of fish consumed in Cambodia alone are caught from this lake. Unfortunately, the water quality is now also endangered, which not only damages the ecological system in Tonle Sap, but also the rice cultivation in the province due to the contaminated Sediment carried along. Evildoers in this regard are industrial plants and growing cities along the Mekong – from China to Thailand to Cambodia. And yet – a visit is definitely worth it, because the damage is still inconspicuous at first glance and hopefully will not get worse. Trust must be placed in the ASEAN community, which, like the EU community of States, wants to lead the Southeast Asian countries ecologically and economically successfully into the future.
