Where is Kairouan Located?

The city of Kairouan-about 50 kilometers inland from Sousse – is the fourth most important city of Islam after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. It was founded in 670 ad by a follower of the Prophet Mohammed, who had many miraculous apparitions and stands at the place where a source arose. It is said that seven visits to Kairouan correspond to a journey to Mecca. The atrium of the Grand Mosque (which may be visited by “unbelievers” except on Fridays) is to accommodate up to 200,000 pilgrims on Holy Days. There are many other mosques and shrines, the Great mosque is the holiest site. The prayer room is supported by a multicoloured “pillar forest” of Roman, Byzantine and Arab Times. The 5-metre-high, artfully carved wooden Chancellor (Minbar) dates back to the 9th century.

What Country is Kairouan in?

Not only did the Romans play a decisive role in Tunisia’s history, but the Arabs also gave the country their distinctive stamp. Kairouan is probably the only major Tunisian city that is not ancient, but founded by the Arabs. Kairouan is considered the cradle of Islam. The legend tells that a camp (Kairouan) was set up here on behalf of the Caliph. It is certain that the birth of the city can be dated to the year 671.
