Where is Jaffna Located?
Jaffna is located on a peninsula at the northern tip of Sri Lanka and is therefore closer to India than to the Sri Lankan capital Colombo. Culturally as well as politically, Jaffna often has the feeling that it is more similar to Indian Tamil Nadu than Sri Lanka. Therefore, a stay in Jaffna can also be a bit of a cultural shock if you have travelled around Sri Lanka for a long time and become familiar with Sri Lankan culture.
Even the most ignorant Tourist will notice a great Indian influence in Jaffna. This is most obviously represented by the Indian music that blares from every shop and Café in Jaffna or the Hindu Gopuram, which here replaces the Buddhist Dagoba. This mixture of Indian and Sri Lankan culture is one thing above all else: incredibly interesting! It is worth exploring the city.

Jaffna was for a long time one of the main stages of the civil war. More than any other city in Sri Lanka, Jaffna symbolizes the Terror, the destructive power of war and the absurdity of the long war years. The symbolic power of meaning becomes clear, among other things, when one considers that government troops seized the city in 1995 and the LTTE forced the entire city population to flee into the vicinity of Jaffna and the army finally occupied a ghost town.
Tamil Guerrillas, SLA troops or the so – called peacekeeping force-all have been atrocities in Jaffna over the years. In 1990 alone, the LTTE forced most Muslims to leave Jaffna. Blockades, bombings, did the Rest, many inhabitants left the city, which led to a drastic decline in population.
