Irkutsk is located Russia. Irkutsk (Иркутск) is the only outflow of lake Baikal, the Angara river in Siberia on the TRANS-Siberian railway. The town of 579,268 inhabitants is one of the most important starting points for trips to Lake Baikal.

Irkutsk – like many other cities in Siberia-did not appear on the map until the middle of the 17th century. It was founded as a winter camp at the mouth of the Irkut River. After 9 years, in 1661, established the Cossacks, under the leadership of Yakov Pochabiv an Ostrog (settlement) on the steep banks of the Angara river, opposite the confluence of the Irkut.
