The name Houmas commemorates the first owners of the land, the Houmas Indians, who sold the land of today’s Houmas House Plantation and Garden in the mid-18th century. When completed about 100 years later, the property was considered the crown jewel of Louisiana’s River Road and became known as the “Sugar Palace” – an apt nickname for the country’s largest sugar producer at the time. Today, memorabilia and art objects from a bygone era are kept and exhibited in the 16 rooms of the mansion. In addition to spectacular gardens, Houmas House Plantation also boasts elegant architecture and amenities. Directly on site there are comfortable huts where you can stay overnight. Culinary tip: Latil’s Restaurant dates back to the 1770s and offers one of the most exclusive dining experiences in the state of Louisiana.
