The park, donated by the Vila family in 1904, already contained the first animal exhibits in 1911, which quickly grew into a respectable collection and the resulting Henry Vilas Zoo. As one of the few AZA-accredited Zoos with free admission, it is not only popular with Madison residents, but is a popular destination for young and old beyond Wisonsin’s borders. Especially in recent years, the number of areas has grown significantly; in addition to the Penguin, there is also a primate and big cat area, a large visitor centre and a rainforest Bird Area.
