Halifax , city and urban area (as of 2011 urbanized area), metropolitan district of Calderdale , metropolitan county of West Yorkshire , historic county of Yorkshire , north of England . An ancient trading city for the trade of cereals, wool and fabrics, it lost its preeminence to Bradford (just to the northeast) in the nineteenth century. It is the administrative center of the metropolitan municipality.
