Haifa is one of the most famous cities in Israel. The city has approximately 272,000 inhabitants and is the third largest city in Israel after Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. It is a comparatively young city, because today’s big city on the Mediterranean coast was founded only in the middle of the 18th century. Already in ancient times, settlements (Tell Abu Hawam) existed on or on the edge of the present-day urban area. About 600,000 people live in the greater Haifa area with the cities of Krajot, Tirat Carmel, Daliyat al-Karmil and Nescher.
