Where is Griffith Observatory Located?
You can admire the stars and immerse yourself in the history of Hollywood
Built in 1935, the Griffith Observatory is almost as famous as the Hollywood lettering. It attracts everyone who “loves space, science, a magnificent view of L. A. and the art deco architecture of the building,” says Bonnie Winings, director of the Friends of the Observatory Association.
Film lovers will probably recognize the Observatory in Griffith Park: it was the filming location for the dance scene in the film La La Land (2016), in which actors Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone moved in the air under a wide starry sky in waltz time. As far as film shoots are concerned, the observatory is an old hand: even before the recordings of this award-winning work, it served as a characteristic setting of … for they do not know what they are doing (1955). In this Film, the class newcomer , played by James Dean, tries to impress his classmates in the Planetarium, only to then get into a knife fight in the parking lot.
In an irony of fate, Dean unveiled a bust of himself right here, just before he died at the age of 24. Today this bust is visible near the front lawn in front of the Observatory. There are still many photos taken of her, Winings says, “especially considering that you can see the Hollywood lettering in the background.“
