Grand Island, the capital of Hall County, is the center of a heavily agricultural area. Sugar beets are mainly cultivated, there is also a sugar refinery here. Attractions include the Crane Meadows Nature Center and the Stuhr Museum. In 1857, the area was inhabited by 35 German emigrants. In 1866 the railway reached the settlement, which became the city in 1872.
