Where is Fontenay Abbey

Fontenay Abbey Located

Located between Auxerre and Dijon, The Fontenay 1118 department was founded by Bernhard von Clairvaux, the charismatic leader of the Cistercian reform movement. It is the oldest preserved Cistercian monastery in the world. In the course of the French Revolution, the monastery was dissolved and the monks followed the paper mill de Brüder Montgolfier. Her descendants, the Aynard family, took care of the restoration and preservation of the Romanesque ensemble of the monastery church, dormitory, monastery, chapter Hall, Monk Hall and blacksmith’s workshop in a remarkable way.

The abbey is open all year round. Every year, more than 100,000 visitors come to admire the beauty and clarity of its architecture, which has been preserved here for more than 900 years and to enjoy the tranquility of this deeply spiritual place. The Tour leads through the majority of the monastery buildings, as well as through gardens and the Lapidarium. It ends in the bookstore.
