Eureka was founded in 1859 after the area was first explored by Douglass Ottinger in 1850. In 1860, there was a massacre of the local Wiyot Indians. Until 1914, the city was only accessible by sea. The capital of Humboldt County, which has grown together with the at the Northern end of the Bay nearby Arcata, is today an important centre for the Redwood timber industry. The town of Fortuna is known for its mild and Mediterranean climate. Trinidad is a small fishing village with great beaches.
