Where is Erdenet Located?
The city of Erdenet has 90,000 thousand inhabitants and is the third most important city of Mongolia. It is the capital of Orkhon province and is located in northern Mongolia. Ulan-Bator and Erdenet are 370km away by car and 241km as the crow flies. There is no airport in Erdenet.

Erdenet is one of Mongolia’s youngest cities. It was created in 1974 where important copper deposits were discovered in 1950. A railway connecting Erdenet and the Trans-Siberian Railway was inaugurated in 1977. The route is 121km long. In the mid-1980s, the majority of the population was Russian, most were engineers and mien workers. However, after the Fall of communism in 1990, most Russians left Erdenet, today about 10% of the population is Russian. #### Economy the 4th largest copper plant in the world is located in this city. “Erdenet Mining Corporation” is a Russian-Mongolian joint venture and was the first source of income of the Mongolian state.
