What Country is Elbasan in?

Elbasan is one of the largest cities in Albania and is located in the center of the country north of the shkumbin river. It has a population of almost 80,000 people. The city has had many different names over the centuries, including neocastros in the Greek language, Novigrad in Slavic and Terra Nuova in Italian. The first settlement of the region took place as a trading place at the crossroads of the important Roman road Via Egnatia. Around the 5th century, Christianity spread throughout the region and several cathedrals and basilicas were built. During the Ottoman occupation, Sultan Mehmed II built a moat in 1466. This castle was named Elbasan. The city named after her later became an important centre of Ottoman civilization for several centuries.
