Founded in 1795, Edmonton is the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta. However, traces of settlements date back at least 11,000 years, as evidence shows. The provincial capital has 932,546 inhabitants, the metropolitan area 1,411,945 inhabitants (as of 2011). Edmonton is the second largest city in the province of Alberta after Calgary and the fifth largest city in Canada.
