What do Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and the Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho have in common? Anything with volcano, Lava, grey primeval times etc.? Pretty shortened but not quite wrong. On closer inspection the thing is quite complicated.

It is known that the earth consists of several large continental and oceanic plates. These plates are not rigid, but they rub against each other, drift away from each other or slide over each other. More than 90% of all volcanoes are located on the borders of these so-called lithospheric plates.

In addition to the volcanoes at the plate boundaries, there are fire-breathing mountains lying in the middle of a plate. At these places, the underground heat (at a depth of about 30-100 km) is particularly high and therefore they are also referred to by geologists as Hot Spots. Where there is a Hot Spot, the Earth’s crust has a weak point and it can rise in a so-called Plume of hot rock material from the deeper Earth’s mantle and slowly melt the crust. When the rising rock reaches the surface of the Earth, a new volcano is formed.
