What County is Columbus?
The city of Columbus, located on the border with Alabama and on the Chattahoochee, is rather insignificant. Founded in 1828, the city is located on the way up here navigable Chattahoochee River. Dominat were cotton plantations and later the textile industry. The city is also influenced by the nearby Fort Benning military camp. Americus was founded in 1832. At the end of the 19th century, the city experienced a strong upswing, visible to this day at the Windsor Hotel. In 1890 there was an electric tram. 1961 was held in the city of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a weekend locked in jail. La Grange is popular with tourists due to its proximity to West Point Lake. In the city until the 90’s the separation of races remained de facto. The surrounding area, to this day Peanutland, has been the Focus of the world public through the Expresident and later Nobel Prize winner Jimmy Carter. Not only for his opponents, the place was Plains where he came from, a Synonym for Hinterwäldertum. The Spa town of Hot Springs has healing warm springs. Here, President Franklin Rossevelt sought relief from his paediatric disease.
