Actually, the lace should not look like it does today, but was created by a size competition. With the help of its architect William Van Alan, the builder Walter Chrysler wanted to create what was at that time the largest building in the world. But Van Alan’s former Partner and now competitor also had the skyscraper’Bank of Manhattan Trust Building ‘on Wall Street built at the same time with the same goal. So the competition had started! It was constantly going back and forth: after each press release about the actual planned height, the opposite side increased. Spoiler Alert: in the end, the Chrysler Building won against the Bank of Manhattan and was named the tallest building in the world after its completion in May 1930.
