Chirchiq is located at the foot of the Chatkal mountains at 582 m above sea level and has 145,600 inhabitants (as of 1999). The largest ethnic group in Chirchiq are the Uzbeks, followed by Kazakhs.
Chirchiq was founded in 1935, when several villages grew together after the construction of a hydroelectric power station at Chirchiq. Chirchiq was the first industrial center to emerge around Tashkent after the latter city became the capital.
