Where is California State Railroad Museum?
This sprawling museum in Sacramento, consistently ranked among the best railroad museums in the country, features 21 carefully restored “steam horse”locomotives as well as the matching wagons, many of which can be entered and visited. An incredible level of detail – authentic porcelain in the dining car, velvet and plaster in the Sleeping Car of the Pullman type, a chubby wooden escort car-gives you an impression of rail travel before the heyday of the automobile.
Numerous exhibits illustrate how the railroad shaped the life, economy and culture of the Golden State. Children will be delighted if they can get into a Pullman-style sleeping car, a dining car with railway crockery or a replica of a railway post office on wheels. Guided tours are offered daily, and special Events, among other things, “Spookomotive Train Ride” on weekends in October and in November and December, “The Polar ExpressTM Train Ride”, including a visit from Santa Claus.
On weekends in spring and Summer (April through September), the Museum offers hourly excursions on the popular Sacramento Southern Railroad, which snaps along the banks of the Sacramento River right through Old Sacramento. Enjoy the view from a first class panoramic car, from a closed car or from an open freight car (guess what the kids prefer!).
