Where is Burney Falls?
One of the most spectacular waterfalls in the entire state – if not the entire continent – is this 39-Meter-high, fern-covered cascade that seems to come out of nowhere. About a hundred kilometers northeast of Redding, in an area that looks like a disordered collection of weathered cinder cones and wide plains under cloudless skies, Burney Falls is one of California’s biggest surprises. It is therefore not surprising that Teddy Roosevelt, the 26th president of the USA, spoke of the “eighth wonder of the world” at her sight.
Follow a short path to the main viewpoint in McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. Here they stand directly opposite the wide wall of water that rushes over the fern-overgrown rock and see her drawing rainbows into the mist and pattering with such force into the crystal clear basin at her foot that she carries bubbles of air far into the depths. But above all, you can hear this natural spectacle: you have to scream if you want to talk here – but you can also simply be silent and amazed. Although the main cascade originates at the upper edge of the rock wall, water from the snow melt also penetrates further down from the porous volcanic rock. Follow the path to the foot of the waterfall, where you will probably only hold your Hand briefly in the water, because its temperature rarely rises above 5 °C. anglers do not seem to mind, however, because both the basin and Burney Creek above and below the falls are a popular area for fly fishermen, who fish according to the method “catch and release”.
