Where is Buffalo National River?
In 1972, Congress designated the Buffalo River in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas as the first National River in The United States.
However, not only the water itself is protected by the provision, but also the banks on both sides. These have been preserved by the protected Status as true natural paradises and are home to numerous animal and plant species. A visitor center is located between the towns of Baker Ford and Gilbert, accessible via Highway 65, from Harrison to drive south. From the airport in Little Rock, the area around the National River can be reached in about two hours by taking Interstate I-40 and Highway 65 North.
The Buffalo River is approximately 240 kilometers long and runs through the northwestern district of Arkansas in a west-east direction from the Boston Mountains to its confluence with the White River. Not the entire river is designated as a National River, this Status and administration by the National Park Service refers only to the lower 217 kilometers, while the upper section of the river as part of the Ozark National Forest is under the administration of the U.S. Forest Service. The protected status of the river had been established because there had previously been various plans to dam the water with DAMS; this was to be prevented. Today, the Buffalo River is one of the few in the United States that has not been affected by dams, straightening, or sewerage, and thus has been preserved in its natural course.
