The Brooklyn Bridge (formerly called The New York and Brooklyn Bridge) was the longest suspension bridge in the world after its construction in 1883. It has a total length of 1,833 metres and a wingspan of 486 metres. It connected New York with its neighbor Brooklyn, which was still independent at the time. The construction of the bridge cost 18 million dollars. To finance the bridge, its crossing cost a toll of five cents per vehicle at the beginning. Five cents for horse with rider and one Cent per pedestrian. Only in 1911 were the fees abolished.
