In the 4th century BC, Halikarnassos had gained a certain degree of independence through clever politics. It became famous for the tomb built around 350 BC by King Mausolus II: the Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The magnificent building was severely damaged by an earthquake in the 12th century and later served the St John as a quarry for their fortress St. Peter. Halikarnassos himself had already lost its former significance after Alexander the great’s conquest.

At the beginning of the 20th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, Bodrum was no more than a small fishing village and a place of exile before it was discovered by tourism in the 1960s.
