Where is Blantyre Located?

Blantyre was founded in 1876 and declared a municipality in 1895. It is the oldest city in South – East and Central Africa and has a long history and rich cultural heritage. Blantyre is located in the south of Malawi in the mountains of the Shire Highlands at an altitude of about 1,600 m and is the second largest city in the country with about 700,000 inhabitants. Together with the neighbouring town of Limbe, Blantyre has a joint city parliament. Together, the area of both towns is 215 km2.

The Blantyre and Limbe are considered the commercial centre of Malawi and host numerous national and international companies as well as three of the five Colleges of the University of Malawi. In 1968, a partnership was signed between the cities of Blantyre and Hannover. To date, this partnership exists, which is supported by the circle of friends and promoted by various projects in the field of sustainable development and culture in Malawi as well as in Hannover.

From Ndirande it is three kilometers to the city center of Blantyre, the second largest city of Malawi. The slum area winds along the lower slopes of Mount Ndirande, which is 1800m high. Half way up is Ndirande Ring Road, the commercial and factory centre of Ndirande.
