Berlin is the largest city in Coos County, an area bordering Canada in the highest North between Vermont and Maine. The district includes the northern part of the very popular holiday Area White Mountains as well as other mountain and mountain regions. The first attempt of foundation in 1771 failed, the second attempt in 1829 was successful. In 1882, the first Ski Club in the USA was founded here, and in 1897, Berlin was granted City rights. The city of Lancaster, district capital, was founded on the Connecticut River in 1763.
