Where is Beersheba Located?
The city of Be’er Sheva (Hebrew: “fountain of the seven”) is located in southern Israel and is one of the largest cities in the country. The Hebrew translation of the name gives rise to a variety of other spellings, such as Beersheba, Beersheva, Be’er Sheva, Beersheva, Beer Sheva and be’sheba. The present city is located 72 km south-southwest of Jerusalem and about halfway between the Mediterranean Sea and the southern tip of the increasingly silting Dead Sea.
Located in the be’er Sheva-Arad plain, Beersheba is considered the “capital of the Negev desert”. The relative isolation from the centre of the country makes it a regional attraction. Today’s city is mostly only a few decades old. Their neighborhoods, especially the older ones, are numbered according to the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.
What Country is Beersheba in?
The Jewish population left the city in 1929 during the Arab riots that swept across the country. Only after the conquest of Beersheba by Israeli troops in the war of independence in October 1948 did Jews settle in the city again; after the city had been abandoned by the former inhabitants and Egyptian troops.
As a city of development, Beersheba managed to develop into a regional centre with enormous development in business, science and culture. In 1966, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev was founded, one of the most famous universities in the country. That know-how plays a major role in Beersheba is shown not only by the numerous scientific, above all biotechnological research projects, but also by such a marginal phenomenon as the fact that here, relative to the number of inhabitants, most chess grandmasters can be found worldwide.
