Where is Batticaloa Located?
In the Gulf of Bengal lies the little visited and small town of Batticaloa. It is beautifully situated and has retained much of its original charm. Since it is located halfway on an island in a lagoon, the city was hardly hit by the Tsunami in the opposite direction to other port towns.
The 54 km long saltwater lagoon has truly picturesque spots, and those who take part in a boat tour here can discover an incredible variety of bird species. Batticaloa is best known for the phenomenon of the “singing fish”, whose existence has not yet been proven. However, these are even mentioned in the Encyclopedia Britannica. To experience the phenomenon, according to legend, one should dive a paddle into the water on moonlit nights and with little swell and hold the ear to the other end. Then you can hear different sound. This natural phenomenon has not been scientifically proven until today, but it is still considered the main attraction of the city.
What Country is Batticaloa in?
More tangible are the many Hindu temple complexes Batticlaos as well as the remarkable Dutch Fort from the 17th century. It is located on a promontory immediately adjacent to the lagoon. Many Wall remnants are well preserved, although now luxuriantly overgrown. Today admission to the site is unfortunately not possible.
File 140Interessant also the Lady Manning Bridge, which connects the promontory with the island. The steel bridge dates back to the colonial period of Great Britain and is one of the longest bridges in Sri Lanka.
In 1942, the Japanese Air Force sank the British aircraft carrier “Hermes” off the coast of Batticaloa. The wreck of this aircraft carrier lying at a depth of 55 m is one of the most interesting dive sites in Sri Lanka. It is possible for experienced divers to participate in a Tour.
